Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace — do you need both?
Both give you email, docs, spreadsheets and cloud storage. Paying for both at once is one of the most common quiet overlaps in a household or side-business budget.
Microsoft 365Google Workspace
The short answer
Bottom line: One office suite covers the whole job for almost everyone — email, documents, spreadsheets, slides, video calls and cloud storage. If you are paying for both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, one of them is very likely idle. Pick the one your documents and contacts already live in and cancel the other.
What’s actually different
Google Workspace is cloud-native and browser-first, with the smoothest real-time multi-person editing in Docs and Sheets, and it now bundles Gemini AI into every paid plan. Microsoft 365 centers on the full desktop Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps, which still handle complex spreadsheets, pivot tables, macros and long formatted documents better than any browser-based app, and it works fully offline. Entry-level pricing is close between the two. Both include roughly similar cloud storage and video calling. The real differences are workflow and ecosystem, not missing features — which is exactly why running both at once rarely earns its keep.
Which one to keep
Keep Google Workspace if your team or household already collaborates in the browser, wants the smoothest real-time co-editing, and values built-in AI at no extra cost. Keep Microsoft 365 if you depend on desktop Excel or Word for serious spreadsheet or document work, need offline access, or already run Windows and other Microsoft infrastructure. If you only use one suite for actual work and keep the other because of an old habit or a single shared file, that is the one to cancel.

Keep one suite — compare current plans
Entry-level plans for both suites sit close in price, so the savings come from not running two overlapping subscriptions at once, not from switching providers. Compare current plans before you renew either one.
